H. Walton Mitchell graduated from the Pennsylvania State College in 1890 before pursuing a career in law. As an undergraduate, Mitchell played a major role in the organization in 1887 of the Free Lance, predecessor to the Daily Collegian newspaper, and in the establishment of La Vie yearbook, first published in 1889 as a junior class annual.
